How to create a modern bathroom

Tina Mills

Are you ready to commit to your New Year’s resolution and take the first steps towards renovating your bathroom? If you have recently returned from a holiday and are yearning to transform your home, now is the perfect time to harness those relaxed, holiday sensations and give your bathroom a bit of reinvigoration.

After basking in a luxurious hotel rest in Bali, or down south or elsewhere in Australia, no doubt you have enjoyed the comfort of a room with a beautiful, deep bath, stylish basins and quality tapware. You probably wished you could recreate some of that luxury in your own home. Well, you can!

Today’s modern bathroom decors can be anything from white and glossy, to earthy and textural. However, whatever your colour and style preferences, there are a few ways to achieve a modern look.

One of the first rules is to go for wall-hung options for vanity, cabinetry, accessories and toilet (depending on your budget). This not only gives a more streamlined look overall, but also creates more usable space and helps with cleaning.

If you’re not having a wall-hung vanity basin, choose an under-mount basin to show off a stunning stone bench top, or go for a vessel basin as a feature piece.

While chrome is the most popular finish for tapware and accessories, brushed platinum or matte black are great choices to achieve a more contemporary design. If you choose chrome, make sure it is a reputable brand of tapware because the quality of chrome finish will be significantly better than cheaper alternatives.

If you need to install a new toilet, it is always best to do away with the exposed tap and hose if this is your current model. An in-wall (concealed) cistern with a wall-hung pan is the ideal for a contemporary bathroom, but a back-to-wall toilet suite with a soft closing and quick-release seat is also effective for renewing your space.

To go that extra step, introduce some creature comforts such as a freestanding bath or hydrotherapy spa bath, heated towel rails, and a combination shower set.

Combine your new fittings with luxury tiles in a large format, either in white (gloss or matt depending on lighting and preference) or a subtle, textured design. Finally, consider a feature of mosaic tile to enhance the overall effect.
