Laundry Renovations

Our laundry renovations are about maximising use of space and adding a touch of charm. As with kitchens, today we want our laundries to help us with more than the basics. As well as washing and drying clothes, you may also want to have the area serve as a scullery, craft room, mudroom or powder room.

Practical ideas that work for small laundry renovations

Because laundries are generally small rooms (particularly in older homes), there may not be a lot of scope for reconfiguring the layout. However, you can still achieve a small laundry design that will give you the extra space you crave. By removing an existing broom closet (as we did in the renovation opposite), installing new cabinetry and/or stacking the washing machine and clothes dryer, you can instantly gain more bench space and storage.

The most successful small laundry renovations begin with an interior designer gaining a good understanding of how the space is (or will be) used — these areas of our homes are often multi-functional with usage that extends beyond washing clothes.

They can then review the existing area, taking note of the elements that work and those that are wasted opportunities, and devise a laundry design that is more user-friendly. While much can be achieved with some well-crafted cabinetry, other small laundry ideas include installing rails, racks, hooks and open shelving.

Choose a Design Package For Your Laundry

Make the laundry a pleasure to be in, whatever the task at hand

Although we generally like to keep laundry designs simple, they do not have to be as tedious as some of the tasks they accommodate.

While colours for cabinetry, benchtops and tiles are usually kept neutral, you can create interest and variation with your laundry makeover by incorporating a feature tile or Caesarstone splashback, or a statement sink mixer in a colour finish.

When considering your design, remember that tiling and cabinetry take up most of a laundry renovation cost. We suggest you favour quality cabinetry and, rather than going to full ceiling height, have a simple skirting tile or keep wall tiles at dado height.

Once the project is complete, you can be creative and cost-effective with your own styling.  A few decorative items such as baskets or silk plants add warmth, a framed picture can serve as a focal point, and scented sticks will keep your laundry room smelling fresh and clean. But be careful not to overdo it as you want to make sure you retain your newly gained space and avoid creating clutter and more cleaning.
