Contemporary bathroom design can be a blend of styles such as modern, art deco and postmodern, but it is continually evolving to reflect the trends of the day. Contemporary design has a focus on form above function, celebrates stark contrasts of colour (such as black and white) and is more likely to feature organic curves.
Both styles tend to favour simple, uncluttered spaces with smooth, clean lines, and include reflective surfaces such as exposed metals and glass, as well as timber finishes.
Modern Colours & Decor
There is a lot of scope to be creative with these styles. To achieve a modern bathroom, white is often used but soft neutrals such as sand and fawn will give the space warmth. For the fixtures, choose chrome or brushed nickel tapware in a simple pin lever or linear style, undermount or inset basins, and a neat back-to-wall toilet suite.
For a contemporary bathroom decor, base the colour scheme on white and black or charcoal, and include timber tones or concrete textures. While chrome is the most popular finish for tapware, matt black, white or graphite are also great options to achieve a contemporary design. A countertop basin from Dado or Victoria + Albert is an opportunity to show off some curved lines, and it can be partnered with wall-mounted tapware and a statement mirror.
With either style, it is a good idea to go for a wall-hung vanity to give the bathroom a more streamlined look, and choose finger-pull or simple handles for the cabinetry. Match your new fittings with large format tiles, and consider a feature or mosaic tile to enhance the overall effect.
